A Note On Steel
Steel targets are typically made with either “armor” grade steel (AR 500 aka high velocity) or conventional steel (aka low velocity). We offer our targets with plates of either type. With typical duty rounds (9mm, 40S&W, or 45ACP), targets made with low-velocity plates should last for thousands of rounds before they require replacement. If you're using high-velocity rounds (357 Sig, 357 Magnum, etc.) or using frangible ammunition then the purchase of targets with AR-500 plates is highly recommended.

Target Design/Assembly
Before purchasing a Hard Head Ted target, you should be aware of several issues. First, the arms used to mount the plastic shell are welded onto a section of round rod. This is inherently a weak weld for which there is no inexpensive workaround. This assembly is carefully created through dozens of welds making it as strong as possible and allowing it to resist gunfire remarkably well. It does not resist manhandling and use as a carry handle. When you move a target, you need to grab it by the central rod and/or base, not by the arms. If you do this, the target will provide a long, useful service life.

Second, when the plastic shell is mounted to the frame with nuts and bolts, they can work loose. As the target is used, it is a "best practice" to periodically check the nuts and make sure they stay tight. The use of the included Nylock nuts will decrease this need as will the use of Loc-Tite. The optional "Impact Control System" (standard on Government Models) will also reduce this loosening.
